Power World Software

BES Institute offers software training for Power World Software and its add-on products, including OPF, SCOPF, OPF Reserves, ATC, PVQV, Transient Stability, and SimAuto. Our course also covers the fundamentals of integrated power system engineering, operations, and economics. We can also provide customized software training at your site, suited to your interests and availability. Please contact us if you are interested in software training.

Who Should Attend?

Technicians involved in power system network analysis include system planning and operation technicians, engineers, electricity market analysts, and managers. This training will also assist anyone interested in presenting power system network subjects to technical and non-technical audiences.

Participants in the course are NOT required to be licensed Power World Software Simulator users.


For training delivered in Champaign, all computer equipment will be provided. Participants may be required to bring computers to other sites for instruction. 


The interface of Power World software

The Power World Simulator user interface and essential power system analysis tools are covered in this two-day introductory training.

Participants will study how to:

  • Use text-based interfaces and graphic one-line diagrams to interact with Power World Simulator.
  • create and alter power system models and one-line diagrams
  • exchange data using spreadsheets and text files
  • Create beautiful color contours, use GIS shapefiles, and improve the appearance and dynamic behavior of one-line diagrams.

Participants will also learn the fundamentals of Power World Simulator’s power system modeling and analysis tools, such as:

  • voltage control
  • generation control and area interchange;
  • contingency analysis;
  • linear sensitivity analysis;
  • fault analysis (time permitting)
  • system equivalents
